Abstract
Physical activity, exercise capacity and quality of life, coronavirus phobia and cognitive function of adults with cystic fibrosis (CF) may have been affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. However, it is not known to what extent they are affected by what the pandemic brings compared to healthy people. The aim of this study was to compare physical activity, exercise capacity, quality of life, cognitive function and coronavirus phobia in adult patients with CF and healthy individuals by telerehabilitation during the COVID-19 pandemic. 25 adult patients and 25 healthy individuals were included. Physical activity with International Physical Activity Questionnaire Short Form (IPAQ) and step counts for the last week, exercise capacity with 3 minute step test (3MST) and 1 minute sit to stand test, COVID-19 phobia with Coronavirus-19 Phobia Scale (C19PS), quality of life with Nottingham Health Profile (NHP) and cognitive function with Standardised Mini-Mental State Examination (SMMT) were evaluated. IPAQ, NHP and C19P-S were answered by the participants via the Google forms. The remaining assessments were conducted over the internet via a device that made video conferencing possible. As a result of the study, while the mean number of steps in the last 1 week of the CF group was significantly lower (p<0.05), there was no difference between the IPAQ total score and sub-scores (p>0.05). Compared to healthy controls, individuals with CF had a lower 1 minute sit to stand test score, 3MST pre-test, post-test, 1 minute recovery, the lowest oxygen saturation (SpO2) level observed during the test and climbed steps (p<0,05). Pre-test general fatigue and post-test dyspnea levels were found to be statistically significantly higher in the CF group (p<0.05). Except for the psychological sub-dimension of the C19P-S, there was no difference between the groups in the sub-dimension scores and the total score of the scale (p>0.05). Psychological sub-dimension scores were higher in the healthy group (p<0.05). There was no difference between scores of NHP and SMMT of the groups (p>0.05). Individuals with CF had a 1 minute sit to stand test score, step counts for the last week, coronavirus phobia, SpO2 values recorded during 3MST and climbed steps were lower than healthy individuals. With telerehabilitation, an exercise test can be performed to have an idea about the exercise capacity of the patients. During the COVID-19 pandemic, patients with CF should be followed up with telerehabilitation and physical activity should be encouraged.
