Abstract

This Thesis focuses on decorative fountains and how they can be used to tell stories. The 1st chapter of this Thesis discusses the difference between functional (çeşme) and decorative (su oyunu) fountains and their history and technology. The 2nd chapter examines why decorative fountains can be so effective in telling stories, provides examples of story telling fountains, and discusses their story telling techniques. The 3rd chapter focuses on the role of ceramics as a medium for making fountains, the advantages and disadvantages of using clay to make fountains, and examples of ceramic fountains. The 4th chapter discusses this author s own project, Big Wave, a series of 13 ceramic fountains and 13 pages of written text that all work together to tell story in which the viewer controls the fate of the story s main character. Big Wave is an interactive and mixed-media project that tells a story through written text, ceramic fountains, lights, music, and stop motion clay animation.
