Arthistic and cultural development undergoes dramatic changes throughout the history and the concept of grotesque has been a crucial part of such changes. The meaning behind grotesque concept has been studied by many authors, artists and theorists. The concept is being related to the concepts such as uncanny, carnivalesque, obscenity and another rather than it's first applications of cave drawings. The purpose of this thesis is to investigate the artistic applications of the concept of grotesque’s meanings in the light of esthetics rather than the endeavor of defining the concept. In the first part of this thesis, namely “The Concept of Grotesque”, the origin of the word Grotesque and its theoretical development throughout the history are explained. Moreover, The art pieces that the meaning of Grotesque is expressed are investigated in an holistic approach. In the second part of this thesis, namely “Grotesque Temperament”, how lituraturists and artists are used to express the contexts of Grotesque concept is investigated. The art pieces in which the concepts of uncanny, carnivalesque and hideous, which Grotesque concept defined by, are investigated. The data obtained through investigation are used to create a few pieces of art. In the third part of the thesis, namely “Distortion”, the art pieces that were created during the research are discussed in considiration with similar explicandums in the World. The relationship between Grotesque temperament and distortion is investigated in a holistic view.
