Abstract
Sezik, E.G., Effects of Core, Scapula and Shoulder Muscle Endurance on Air Pistol Shooters’ Sport Performance, Hacettepe University, Graduate School of Health Sciences, Sports Physiotherapy Programme, Master Thesis, Ankara 2021. Air pistol shooting is an olympic sport, performed on indoor shooting ranges, that requires precise and accurate shooting on the target sign. The main goal of the air pistol shooter is to maximize the postural stabilization in order to achieve a high score. Long competition period requires muscular fatigue to occur as late as possible in order to maintain posture and upper extremity control in athletes. For this purpose, our study, is based on the shooting performances of air pistol athletes, was planned to investigate the relationship between the trunk, scapular and shoulder girdle muscles’ endurance. The study was carried out with 28 air pistol shooters aged between 18 and 45. Shoulder girdle endurance was evaluated by Closed Kinetic Chain Upper Extremity Stability Test and Upper Extremity Y Balance Test, trunk endurance by Prone Bridge Test and Side Bridge Endurance Test, endurance of scapular region by Scapular Muscle Endurance Test. In line with the data obtained, the relationship between shooting performance and test parameters was examined. Pearson correlation test was used to examine the relationship in parametric data, and Spearman correlation test was used for non-parametric data. Linear regression analysis was used for variables that were found to be statistically significant. Paired Sample t-test and Wilcoxon test were used to examine the differences between dominant and non-dominant sides. As a result of the study, a statistically significant positive correlation was found between shooting performance and scapular muscle endurance test (p=0,03, r=0,65). However, there was no significant relationship between the tests evaluating the trunk and shoulder girdle muscle endurance and shooting performance (p> 0,05). It was observed that the shooting score increased by 0,375 points for each unit increase of the scapular muscle endurance test. According to the results, increasing the endurance of the scapular muscles can increase the shooting performance by decreasing the oscillations in order to make the scapulothoracic joint and glenohumeral joint more stable. For this reason, it is thought that exercise programs to be created for the muscles around the scapula in air pistol shooters may benefit the shooting performance of the athletes.
