The present study examined the relationship between self-disgust and mental contamination which is first conceptualized by Rachman (1994). Mental contamination has been defined as the feelings of inner pollution that can occur with the influence of some thoughts, images, or memories, without any physical contact. The present study consisted of two stages.
In the first stage of the study, the Self-Disgust Scale Revised Form (ÖTÖ-GGF) was translated into Turkish and the psychometric properties of the Turkish form of the scale was examined. The sample consisted of. 279 university students. The results indicated that theTurkish version of the ÖTÖ-GGF is a valid and reliable measurement tool that can be used to evaluate the level of disgust that individuals direct to their physical and behavioral characteristics.
In the second phase, fifty eight 58 female university students were asked to imagine themselves in the position of the situation described in the scenario as vividly as possible. After the recordings, participants were asked to complete MCR and state self digust scale (time 2) and then they were randomly assigned to self-compassion writing or control conditions. The results showed that experimental manipulation was effective to induce the feelings of mental contamination and related ratings. Individual vulnerability factors wereassociated with mental contamination and related ratings. The correlation analysis results showed that there was a significant relationship between trait self-disgust, self-compassion, and general obsessive compulsive symptom level, but only sense of trait self-disgust was associated with the level of mental contamination and state self-disgust. In addition, the results of Serial Multiple Mediation Analysis Modeling showed that state self-disgust, internal negative emotions, and mental contamination mediated the relationship between the sense of trait self-disgust and the urge to wash. Finally, we examined the effectiveness of the Self-Compassion Writing Task in reducing mental contaminaiton related ratings reported after manipulation. A3 (Time: Time 1, Time 2, Time 3) x 2 (Condition: Experiment and Control) Repetitive Measurement Multiple Variance Analysis was conducted on the three ratings of mental contamination. However, it was found that the experimental intervention did not create a significant difference between the groups in reducing the mental contaminaiton related ratings.
