The aim of this study is to determine the effect of game based teaching methods on writing skills of Turkish learners as a foreign language at an early age. Based on the basic language competencies of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR), original language games and writing exams created by the researcher have been improved to develop a language teaching model that can be applied in the field of teaching Turkish as a foreign language at an early age.
The participants of this study, which was conducted with mixed method, were 101 students at A1 level and 124 students at A2 level who were learning Turkish as a foreign language at an early age and the instructors teaching them. In this study, based on the pretest and posttest model with control group, the participants have been determined as experimental and control group by random selection method. During the applications of game based teaching method, no intervention has been made to the students in the control group. However, in the experimental group, the game based
teaching method, which was developed according to the aims of the study, has been applied.
Before the study, students' level of writing skills have been determined by writing exams which were applied as pretests. The writing exams have been re-applied as posttests to determine the effect of game based teaching methods at the end of the study. The data obtained at the end of the application were analyzed using SPSS program.
The interview form has been applied to the Turkish teachers of the classes where the application was performed, in order to determine the teachers' opinions about the effect of the games on the writing skills of the students. The data obtained from these interviews have been analyzed with content analysis methods.
The basic level of writing skills outcomes stated in the CEFR were used in determining
the content of the designed games; Esar system was used in determining the functions
of the games.
