Abstract
Sensory integration therapy in children with autism is a method commonly used by occupational therapists. Our study; according to the occupational therapy philosophy and MOHO model , intended to investigate the effect of sensory integration therapy in autism spectrum disorder (ASD) children's sensory and functional, by a evidence based method .In this study; 31 ASD children who according to Dunn sensory profile indicate sensory modulations problems divided to intervention (n = 16, mean age = 5.3750) and control group (n = 15, mean age = 5.53) and preliminary assessment and final assessment of the effects of treatment were compared. For evaluation the sensory modulation DUNN Sensory Profile and for analysis of performance, SCOPE survey as a MOHO model based and occupational therapy evaluation tools, was used. Sensory integration based occupational therapy besides family education for intervention groups and home program for each groups were applied for two sessions per week (60 min) during 3 months. The post-intervention results between groups were compared by using SPSS 17 computer program and applying ANCOVA analysis method. In the treatment group better averages were observed in all Dunn Profile areas, i.e. modulation in behavioral level were improved, however there were not any significant difference in "Sensory Reactions" and "Emotional Social Reactions" between two groups. In all performance areas of SCOPE significant difference was observed between two groups (p <0.05). In this study, achieving the appropriate evidences was aimed by using a control group, pretest - posttest design methods and following the Parham intervention standards. As a result; sensory integration therapy has been found effective for sensory modulation and functional performance. Furthermore it has been determined as a suitable method respecting the occupational therapy philosophy and MOHO model.
