Özet
This study approaches fortunetelling narratives as real social communication and discourse genre as well as a potential means to learn about the future. The contextual and linguistic elements that are widely utilized in narratives are analyzed in terms of the manner and the aim of usage, along with the influence of this usage upon participants. Furthermore, in the analysis of the narratives, personal and collective ideological discourses which are reflected through words are studied thoroughly. This work comprises and introduction, two parts and conclusion. In the first part, it is given the information about the ethnography of speaking, the coffeecup reading tradition, in addition to the place of this tradition in Folklore as a narrative. The second part consists of the analysis of fortunetelling narratives in terms of contextual, syntactic, communicational and ideological features. In this study, the main purpose is to broaden the limits of Folklore field.
